Oriel Gelf
Home Oils Watercolours Prints Profile Sketchbook

I qualified at degree level in Creative Photography at the London College of Printing and spent the next nine years as a professional photographer.

In the early 90's I began painting again, beginning with life and portrait classes at Putney School of Art, while at the same time using the freedom offered by endless summer sunshine in the south of France to paint outdoors.

In France I have worked with a number of professional artists both from the UK and Europe to explore the process of abstracting from the landscape.  More recently I have moved to printmaking following summer schools at St Martins and Farnham art colleges.

Although I love the immediacy and unpredictability of watercolour, I am currently preoccupied with producing a series of small oil paintings on site and in the studio to capture the essence of the Mediterranean climate.  The more measured pace of printmaking presents its own challenge, and for that I have taken speed as my inspiration, utilising the hundreds of photographs I have taken at Formula 1 races in the last four years as a starting point for a less traditional approach to motor racing imagery.
